‘Too entertaining’: NBA playoffs (AP photo)
China’s state broadcaster has taken American NBA games off the air,apparently because they are considered inappropriate as the countrymourns the devastation of the May 12 earthquake.

China banned all television entertainment programming and otherdiversions, such as karaoke, for an official three-day mourning periodlast week. The popular basketball games, in the midst of a playoffseason, were allowed back on the air briefly on Thursday following theend of mourning period, but they have not returned.

China Central Television’s sports controller, Jiang Heping, didn’treturn a call seeking comment on Wednesday. The Xinhua news agencyquoted Yu Jia, one of the station’s sports anchors, saying that anorder had come in from top-level officials on May 23 to suspend NBAbroadcasts. “The whole nation is now focusing on the quake reliefwork,” said Mr. Yu.
